Prabal Gurung

Fall Winter 2013 New York Fashion Week.

Prabal Gurung currently an American growing designer, although still "finding himself" is progressively adapting his designs to continue to improve and climb the social later of designers. With his Fall Winter 2013 Collection Gurung asserted femininity in a powerful way through a military concept. He was one of the top picks in his regards to American designers, due to his back story of bringing together his inspiration of Asgarda Women, known by many as modern-day Amazons, and the current body armor concepts being developed by the military into military theme collection. Some of the colors used this season by this designer were ivory, black, crimson, loden and navy. These colors where brought to life when seen on satin skirts, knits and silk charmeuse halter blouses, wool coats, peacoats, jackets, and glossy silk dresses. What made this fashion show even more appealing was when the tailoring on the silhouettes looked imperial rather then badass. Day wear was given structure. Jackets were shown with deep peplums at the waist. Peacoats had cutaways, and some coats were also funnel-necked. Draping was also seen on the dresses. Cocktail dresses, gowns with bare shoulder that exposed the back and sides of the asymmetrical gowns. Split skirts were combined with gladiator stilettos to give the Prabal Gurung woman an edge. There was black-and-crimson brocade detailing on some of the bustier dress and crimson silk crepe draped dresses had cut outs and graphic black inserts. All this together just established Prabal Gurung as an amazing American Designer with great aesthetic and a thirst to grow and make his collection more elegant.

Chanel

Fall Winter 2013 Paris Fashion Week.

Karl Lagerfeld's Fall Winter 2013 collection presented at the Grand Palais was breath taking. Based on a dream, an Automatic Collection was created. According to Style.com the collection revolved around a gigantic spinning globe which showed 300+ locations where Chanel may be bought. As if this was not enough the collection encompassed 79 different looks for various worldwide locations. The color story presented by Lagerfeld for Chanel was red, black, pink, navy and weaves. And what was mind boggling was the fabrics defied recognition. The fabric seeming as if woven, was just as likely to be an artful web embroidery. Other fabrics such as tweed's glittered, metallic thread brought shine to the wovens. These designs brought the galaxy into question. Though that impression might also have been steered by the hot pink, or blue Cardin-esque helmets worn by the models. Solid black patent leather boots covered in silver chains and clutch quilted bags with the metal handles appealed to the more youthful buyers while Karl still provided Classic Chanel tweed ensembles with rounded shoulder coats and sweaters embellished with colorful feathers or imposing black and white coats festooned with 3D fabric flowers. Other silhouettes included slim, military tinged, coats with the hems folded back to reveal a contrasting color or a lining of flatted ruffles. Continuing to add onto the 79 look, more graphic print dresses, two-piece knit skirt and sweater were added to the collection. A creative aspect of the presentation of the fashion show was when the globe was dark, as though night had fallen onto the world. The clothes were dark as well. The other key shape was equally streamlined, cut high on the thigh at the front, dipping to mid-calf at the back. Truly conformity between Karl and Coco.

Roksanda Ilincic

Fall Winter 2013 London Fashion Week.

The three elements that define Roksanda Ilincic's Fall Winter 2013 Collection revolve around texture, structure, and 'witchy-ness'. This show took place at the Savoy Hotel during the London Fashion Week. Pink PVC and High-Shine Taffeta dominated the runway. And to complement the pretty in pink theme, vivid green and dark chocolate brown dresses were being presented. Gray plaid check was embedded into the collection as well. Fabrics include lace covered in glossy dark chocolate brown. "Oversized coat came in delicate shade of the feminine hue, and a fitted dress in a midi length which was color-blocked - via contrast accents at the waist and collar" as stated by style.com. And as stated before pale pink, candy floss and a neon salmon tint on PVC Aprons or dresses captured my attention when it came to British Designers.

Balenciaga

Fall Winter 2013 Paris Fashion Week.

As Alexander Wang enters Balenciaga, Balenciaga has become one of the most important brands to closely observe. Wang has been able to immediately impress his audience by reverting to classic Balenciaga heritage with little to no change. Some of the minor changes in the silhouettes were rounded shoulders on the stiff bulky outerwear, and as stated by NowFashion.com "the sculptural way the designer curved out the peplum of a halter neck dress and the above the wrist “bracelet” sleeves". When it came to color Alexander Wang played it safe. His color story consisted of the presences of all color and the absences of all color, that is right, Black and White. Fabrics consisted of the cracked, paint-spackled mohair knits, and prints such as the infamous marble print which was publicized and even embedded onto the runway floor. But what really amazed me was the atmosphere being produced by the clothing, finally being classy, ethereal, and extremely polished. This emphasized that Alexander Wang isn't only good at glorifying street wear, but apt to play close attention to detail with high end respected brands.

Saint Laurent

Fall Winter 2013 Paris Fashion Week.

How could one resist California Grunge? A San Franciscan garage band as runway music, a Los Angele's artist to design the invitation'a art. It was a dream come true for us here at Urban Street and Transportation. Hedi Slimane's California Grunge or what many are saying Grunge not YSL is exactly what much of the youthful population is searching for.  Yes one can purchase clothes from thrift stores to accomplish the biker babe, baby doll, or even the school girl look... But it feels so much better when you can trade up in fashion and get a designer label who has provided a collection which resembles what you wear on a daily. No more discrimination or anxiety that your style does not meet the price point necessary to be part of the "IN" crowd.
The collection consisted of random mash-ups, versatile cardigans, vintage plaid, florals, strings of pearls and black bows, torn and worn denim, fishnet stockings, black boots, bed/sex hair, and lazy make-up. But what took the cake was the leather "biker jackets, shrunken sleeved shimmering evening jackets, modified tailcoats, duffle coats, black trench coats and frayed crystal covered boleros" as stated by NowFashion.com and Style.com. These are key outerwear items which promise to be key buys and top shelf participants. This is a sure sell out and money making collection for Saint Laurent and although not innovative or new, it is a vintage classic look that has not left the streets. And last but not least, let us thank Hedi Slimane for the cool color palette which he has presented this collection of dark hues for the dark winter to come.

Fast Fashion Giants

 H&M

The Clothing

http://www.hm.com/us/
This season's Summer 2013 collaboration is no other then H&M and Beyonce Knowles. The name is in correlation with Beyonce's upcoming World Tour Beyonce as Ms. Carter. The collection is being named Beyonce as Ms. Carter at H&M in honer of the tour. Swimwear is being produced in Canary Yellow, Tye Dye Tea, and Classic Black have taken the Media by a storm. These two piece silhouette swimwear pieces are being produced from Polyester, Cotton, Rayon, Linen, and may more variations of fabrics.

The Manufacture

http://www.newser.com/
When walking into the store and checking the products labels I was able to come across some of H&M's main garment producers. These producers all consisted of being Asian countries: Bangladesh, Cambodia, China,India, Indonesia, and Vietnam are just some of the few that were seen in the most popular items. After doing some research and coming across an article from Newser.com I found an article pertaining to H&M. In Cambodia, motorcart picks up garment factory workers in front of their factory after working a night shift. Cambodian lawmakers approved reduction of night time pay for garment workers highly effecting the economics of these workers.

The Quality

http://www.hm.com/us/
The quality of the products found at H&M resemble timeless classics but the actual texture of the products show a lifetime no longer than a year. Due to fast fashion being, well fast fashion the products are now being made the the quantity over quality mentality. One of the things that we can admire about the company though is its use to recycle their garments. Whether it is to reuse the fabric or donate it, H&M has began accepting donations. The plan is to use the clothing that has been bought from their store to make more clothes thus producing an Eco-fashion environment.

 UNIQLO

The Clothing

http://www.uniqlo.com/us/
The latest collaboration forecast by GQ's May edition has finally arrived at UNIQLO. The UNIQLO and Michael Bastian collaboration is now in stores with 16 different looks.  Attempting to Maintain his American Menswear High Stature he has created a shirt that has the right fit, the right sleeve length, the right body length, and just when you thought your polo was perfect, he adds the right collar height. With his design focusing on tiny details that people do not realize until they put on their polo shirt, Michael Bastian and UNIQLO have teamed up to once more give the universal man the ultimate basic needed for this summer at the right price. This slim fit shirt produced from cotton and polyester comes in the traditional Varsity colors we have become so accustomed seeing on all the preppy guys. Royal Blues, Varsity Reds, Track Green, Sky Blue, and an integration of Paisley Prints, and even animal prints. Truly a versatile and much needed basic.

The Manufacture

http://www.uniqlo.com/us/
UNIQLO despite their innovation in fabrics, silhouettes, colors, and overall clothes technology still have their products produced in Asian nations such as Bangladesh and China. Yet they have recently proposed to improve the working conditions, and wages of their employees in the production half of their products. They have proposed to establish equal wages by 2020. As found on UNIQLO.com they would like to produce all their clothing with harmless products during the production stage. Yet, they continue to outsource in poverty filled nations.

The Quality

http://www.uniqlo.com/us/
The quality of the clothing at UNIQLO is remarkable. Although the majority of the products found are all timeless classics and basics they have gone a step ahead by developing fabric technologies, and design innovations to produce the most comfortable and efficient clothing garments. Cottons, Polyesters, and UNIQLO fabrics are found throughout the store. Something that is basic and will last for a long time. Even their clothing campaign to recycle clothing should inform the consumer that UNIQLO clothing is here to stay, so much so that when you get tired of the shirts you can donate them so someone else can wear them.

Environmental Impact and Ethics

Point of View Regarding Ethics

http://www.ethicalfashionforum.com/
I find these Fast Fashion Giants dancing on the line between proper and improper ethics, aiding their company and consumers in one hand, yet hindering their workers in factories in the other hand. But for the most part I believe that with recent happenings of factory accidents and frequent discoveries of where garments are being produced and the population pushing for a Eco-Fashion company's such as UNIQLO are producing time withstanding pieces. And are also taking in donations to distribute to third world nations. H&M on the other hand is taking back their garments to recycle the fabrics and donate to an extent. But the fight being fought by many is the cycle of fashion how New things are introduced, then Better pieces, these pieces are being produced Faster, but then become Obsolete.

Point of View Regarding Environment Impact

http://yukamurai.com/
I believe that the Environmental impact is very negative! People, natural resources, and even the ozone layer is being negatively effected due to the mass productions of all these goods. Yes, by recycling clothing and pushing for an Eco-Fashion we are becoming more environmentally friendly but this does not take away from millions of factories operating daily to produced cheap labor goods. I admire what UNIQLO is doing by making better, longer lasting basics.

Pro or Anti Fast Fashion Collaborations

http://fashionbombdaily.com/
As a consumer I am all for Fast Fashion Collaboration. But as a fashion analyst and Fashion Marketing and Management major I know that collaborations hinder designer names and thus will have to tell my you that No Fashion collaboration are bad. I support brand ambasadore's but I find that when big names like Givenchy seek to make a collaboration its loyal and purist customers are hurt because something with such have social value is reducing itself to category. So all and all, good idea's collaborators, but I think these Fast Fashion Giant's know what they are doing to the consumer market just find without the assistance of big names.

Etro

Etro, which was found at Neiman Marcus, does a great job in their Spring/Summer 2013 collection with the two items from the collection shown above. First, the Gathered Round Neck Paisley Dress in black really sets the tone for what this Italian brand stands for, which is Elegance. The Dress was made of a silky jersey material, with three quarter long sleeves, a very classy fitted pencil skirt and a ruched round neckline dead center at front. As described by Neiman Marcus, “Etro’s dress highlights the narrow proportions of your waist…”. If this was not enough, Etro proceeded to showing this Shawl-Collar Printed Jacket in the color teal with a multitude of color on the print. With Teal being its dominant color it then expands into a multitude of white, green, purples, and blues. Yet it never loses its slim silhouette due to its Viscose/Spandex fabric. An innovative touch from Etro to show they’re a very customer friendly brand.

Bottega Veneta

Bottega Veneta (Spring/Summer 2013), which I found at Barney’s New York on the Class trip to Union Square, had to amazing pieces, which just stood out of the rack. One was the Floral Printed Dress. This dress was a Crepe V-neck Sleeveless dress with floral printing, which was then contrasted by studding. This use of embellishments certainly draw a lot of attention something that is then contrasted by the invisible back zipper. This silk produced dress is truly captivating. This dress did not hang alone; next to it hung a Fan Print Dress. This following silk sleeveless dress also had an invisible back zipper but differed in the fact that it had a fan print with smocked bodice as well as beading at the crew neck of the dress. A simple yet prestigious touch by Bottega Veneta

Marni

Marni’s collection at Barneys has a wide assortment. But what really stood out to me from the Spring/Summer 2013 collection were the Mum Print Dress and Fur Front Cardigan. First, the Mum Print Dress although not containing any fur demonstrates how Marni’s can either make everyday apparel or elegant trade’s men like work with fur. This scoop neck sleeveless dress comes in an eggshell white color with black print on a full scalloped skirt. Not a bad look to start summer with. Next the craftsmanship of working with fur is shown with the Fur Front Cardigan. The cardigan is made of cashmere knit with two-tone fur at front, welt pockets, and ribbed trim. A classy warm fur-lined cardigan to pierce a cold location where winter runs 6 months long.  Its Fabrics range from cashmere/mink fur to cotton/viscose lining with all its fur originating from Finland.

Prabal Gurung

Last but not least Prabal Gurung featured at Barney’s New York is worth mentioning. This American Designer really has become a household name after having dressed the First Lady numerous times. But this Collection the pieces that stood out to me weren’t something that we could expect to see Mrs. Obama wearing out in public. First is a beautiful White with Acid Yellow Embroidered Yoke Dress. This Spring/Summer 2013 collection piece was a silk and cotton blend crewneck sleeveless dress with what Barney’s is calling “Acid Yellow” embroidered yoke. A key structure element on the dress is the grosgrain ribbon at waist allowing a slimmer look and of course the invisible back zipper to avoid any distractions from the beauty of this simple dress. Next a Sleeveless Chiffon Cape Floral Dress is seen in the collection. Made of silk, this silk crepe de chine sleeveless crewneck pops right out at you with its loud floral print. Truly White, Grey, and Blue have never looked this good in Prabal Gurungs collection.

London's Never Looked This Good!

Burberry Prorsum Fall/Winter 2013

Stylesight.com
Stylesight.com
London fashion week was blessed by Burberry when the male models walked down the runway with the Fall 2013 Burberry Prorsum Men's shoes. Something far from their Spring/Summer 2013 Men's Splash Sole Shoes and Patent Leather Ceremonial Shoes. This coming winter men will continue to wear oxfords and unlike many of the competitor designers that showed in New York, Burberry continues to stay away from the Wing-Tipped Dress shoes and remains very British with there simple but elegant Oxfords. For example, to the left we see the black leather dress shoes with the metallic embellishments (Embellishments being an upcoming trend). While on the right we see the ever popular animal print that Chief Creative Officer Christopher Bailey showed will dominate the Fall 2013 collection for Men's and Womenswear. These shoes will coordinate wonderfully with the Men's animal print shirts. While the Embellishments will give a modern feel to this late 1950's styled collection.

Meadham Kirchhoff Fall/Winter 2013

WWD.com
WWD.com
Well here it goes public, Meadham Kirchhoff Fall/Wall 2013 Ready To Wear collection. In my opinion I found the overall collection not one bit appealing. But even bad publicity is good publicity.  What Women's Wear Daily considers a spin off the popes wardrobe for these two designers, I find too unwearable. But nevertheless there were some key images that really stood out. For example, this A-line skirt with ruffles Topped with a a PVC material shiny black biker jacket, long sleeved, with a white ruffled sleeve blouse underneath. Also a bull fighter, cape like jacket due to the over sized collars covering a sheer white dress. Honestly the embroidery on the jacket really make this piece of the collection my only favorite. Overall this collection is very far from the designers prior collections. But Meadham Kirchhoff have always been know for pushing the envelop.

Roksanda Ilincic Fall/Winter 2013

Roksanda Ilincic Fall 2013 Ready-to-Wear
Style.com
NowFashion.com
Roksanda Ilincic had one of my favorite color palettes for this coming season from the 5 designer featured in this blog post. They had the most feminine colors of the entire Fashion London Fall 2013 Fashion Week. The choice of Pinks, Plums, and Greens really helped the collection keep spring alive for yet another season without sacrificing being cold. Roksada Ilincic was yet another designer to us PVC materials in there designs. Pink PVC was popular while Taffeta was the material used in the back. The overall collection was vastly dominated by midi-length skirts and dresses. Every dressed very well structured due to Ilincic's appreciation for architecture. But the most appealing thing would have to be the colors used.

Mary Katrantzou Fall/Winter 2013

NowFashion.com
WWD.com
Although Mary Katrantzou continued to used her recognized prints, this season colors were back seated and more attention to detail was placed on shapes and the silhouettes. Some of these experimentation to attention to the shapes and silhouettes included stiff, jutting sleeves, and origami wrapping and even a symmetrical cape and dress. This was a contract to prior color charged collections but still the uses of colors was not necessary for the art work presented in the clothing making. She really wanted to focus on that and succeed. The collection really stunned the public with its artisanal handiwork.

Peter Pilotto Fall/Winter 2013

WWD.com
The matador jacket has never looked so good. Showing a bold rough look into the collection this key item used through the collection really did it for this designer. It really helped bring the collection together. The cuts, the sowing, the patterns being shown on it really had this be the key item.
